Dear all,
We are pleased to invite you to the next WISE Zoominar on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 8:00–8:45 am PT (11:00–11:45 am ET; 5:00–5:45 pm CEST).
Speaker: Andy Jessup, Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington
Title: The ocean skin temperature: A new measurement approach, its modulation across strong fronts, and its behavior at high winds
Join us via Zoom: https://tudelft.zoom.us/my/wisezoominars
Abstract:
Over the past five years, I have developed a simplified system to measure ocean skin temperature called IRISS that can be deployed on ships, buoys, and USVs. In this talk I will present the IRISS design and validation and the modulation of the net heat flux, wind speed, and skin cooling across SST fronts observed on the validation cruise. I evaluate the ability of the COARE bulk flux algorithm and parameterizations based on wind speed and specific humidity to reproduce this variability. I will also show some intriguing measurements of the bulk-skin temperature difference from a sailboat in a cold air outbreak in the N. Atlantic with wind speeds of 30 m/s that deviate significantly from COARE and other parameterizations.
About the speaker:
Andy Jessup has utilized infrared imaging and radiometry for a wide range of oceanographic remote sensing applications including wave breaking, rivers and inlets, and air-sea heat and gas fluxes.
WISE (Waves In the Sea Environment) is an international community of researchers interested in ocean surface waves and their interactions with the Earth system. The community promotes scientific exchange across observations, theory, modeling, and applications of ocean-wave science.
The Zoominar, including the Q&A, will be recorded and posted on the WISE Zoominars YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/@wisezoominars). By participating, you consent to any information you share being included in the recording and shared.
We look forward to seeing you there!
