Speaker: Jean Bidlot, European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasts, UK
Title: Towards the new ocean wave reanalysis in the future ERA6.

Abstract:
The global analyses and medium range forecasts from the European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) rely on a state-of-the-art atmospheric model. To best represent the momentum, heat and moisture exchanges at the surface of the oceans, it is tightly coupled to an ocean wave model. A coupled ocean model is also included.

ERA6 is the next global reanalysis from ECMWF with a grid spacing of approximately 15 km, compared to ERA5’s 30 km, hence providing more detailed representation of weather conditions and ocean-atmosphere interactions. Moreover, ERA6 will also be a coupled reanalysis, meaning it will use both atmospheric and ocean observations, accounting for interactions between the two. It will utilize the latest advances in Earth system modelling and data assimilation. ERA6 will benefit from efforts to make more observations available, including reprocessed satellite data and rescued data. Production of ERA6 is planned to start in mid 2025, with the most recent decades being produced first. ERA6 is anticipated to be released in 2027.

The talk will focus on the configuration of the wave component, and the wave data used by the wave data analysis. Special attention was necessary to prepare and test all altimeter wave height data planned for ERA6. The effort has greatly benefitted from the European Space Agency Sea State Climate Change Initiative (ESA Sea State CCI) as it delivered a long-term homogeneous datasets of past altimeter mission. Work was still necessary to ensure the continuity of the dataset up to present time since ERA6 will be run as a near real time system. It is anticipated that ERA6 will provide a consistent data record of global wave conditions.

Please note that WISE Webinars including the Q&A will be recorded and posted on the WISE YouTube Channel afterwards (https://www.youtube.com/@wisezoominars). By participating, you consent to any information you share to be included in the recording and shared.
