Rogue waves: Are they really unexplainable?
AI-art by Ina Teutsch (2024)
Abstract
Rogue waves are at least twice as high as the surrounding waves. They appear unexpectedly and can develop enormous forces that pose a threat to ships, offshore structures and possibly even vacationists at the beach. We follow in the tracks of their formation. Is it a simple linear superposition that creates these special waves, or must a nonlinear mechanism be at work?
We observed rogue waves in the North Sea, and found places in shallow water, in which they occurred more often than expected. But why? Are shallow-water solitons part of the explanation? And will it be possible to predict rogue waves some day?
