When creating a new topic, there’ll be a required Category field and an optional tags field. In the tags field you can have any number of tags, and, you can introduce new ones. I went ahead and added definitions and altimetry to some of your existing posts. But give it a try when creating your next topic.
Discourse distinguishes between Categories and Tags. Categories are the structure and is pre-defined (i.e. we need to create a Category before you use it). But tags can be freely added by users as they post.
I think tags are the best fit for fine-grained labeling of topics, like these that you list here.
I’m growing more convinced that we should not have many science-oriented topics as Categories (like we do now) because we need to make a choice of “where do we stop”, or “what’s fine-grained enough”. Another problem with fine-graining categories is that your topic can have only one category. But it can have any number of tags.
Perhaps we keep topic-based categories based on methodology (e.g. observations, modeling, theory) rather than physical process (e.g. Wave-current interactions, Nearshore processes ) because they’re few and relatively clearly defined. And for any more specific categorization, simply use any number of tags.
Fabrice,
Initially, I set up the WISE Forum with a distinct category for each science topic. This approach was intended to make it easier to navigate and find discussions specific to each area of science.
However, as Milan rightly pointed out, this method was beginning to clutter the main page and made it harder to maintain a clean and organized structure. So, we decided to consolidate all the individual science topic categories into subcategories within a single “Topic-Based Discussion” category. This change helps streamline the forum’s layout, making it more user-friendly and easier to find relevant discussions without overwhelming the main page.
